Project Overview Talk

Worthing New Pools is a £15m new leisure centre commissioned by Worthing Borough Council to replace the aging Aquarena. It will create an iconic waterfront building that is intended to catalyse regeneration of the area. AECOM were awarded the design after entering the RIBA design competition with Wilkinson Eyre Architects.

The structure is comprised of a 3 storey concrete frame with basement plant room and steel roof, adjacent to a complex steel-framed pool hall roof. The pool hall houses a diving pool and competition pool, both with moveable floors, and a leisure pool. The signature elements of the structure are the doubly curved fabricated beams spanning 50m along the length of the pool hall. These support the timber roofing, creating a structure that sweeps out towards the sea. The basement and pools are constructed in waterproof reinforced concrete. The structure topped out in July 2012 and the facility will open in spring 2013. The challenges of the project included the complex geometry, the unusual load paths, and managing the interfaces between timber, steel, concrete and glass throughout the structure.

Tom Lee is a Chartered Civil Engineer and a CUED graduate. He will share his experiences of structural engineering applied to a complex multidisciplinary project, working closely with architects, clients and contractors.

Speaker : Tom Lee MEng (Hons) MA (Cantab) CEng MICE

As always, there will be a free lunch.
